Book 3, Page 21

I have fun writing dialog between Melandra and Dunk, though I still don’t think I’ve gotten it quite perfect. There’s a quality to both of their characters which I can feel, but can’t define. And it comes out to some extent when I get them talking with each other.

One of the other weirdnesses about working in the comic format instead of prose is that when you write conversations, you have combine the words with the pictures. You can’t fill a page with just words and you can’t fill it with just pictures. In a novel, you can have people just chat for 50 pages. In a comic, that just wouldn’t work. So, my characters have to have short conversations. And this means we get to know them more slowly than we would in a novel.
